PREMIERE: AKA Keys - Wait for Me (Prod by Yondo)

So here I am, working on rebranding my image and production and while I'm working on my channel, youtube.com/positivevibe90, I see one of my favorite artist I have been able to build a friendship with, just released a new video for his single, "Wait for Me". If y'all remember, a couple of weeks ago, I wrote a piece about him when I came across his video, "You and Me" and we've been in contact since that article. Once again, working with the incredible, Yondo Music, AKA Keyz, once again flexes his incredible flow and wordplay while letting a simple but yet a wavy hook take you to a vibe. I don't know when he will bless us with a full LP but I am definitely looking forward to hearing a full length project by this man. Check out his new video right here and comment, share, like, etc.

Passion versus Greed

I’ll never forget it, last week of April and I was at work and it seemed like my phone would not stop going off but for a very good reason. I was getting a notification about one of my beats being leased or exclusively bought nonstop. Usually when I was working at the job I was working at, at the time, rent week were the worse because I would have nothing leftover to spend but this time it was different. That week I made $700 from my beats along with a $560 Check from work. That begin a high I never wanted to come down. It was the shortest high I ever experienced along with getting checks from YouTube for my 6 to 7 digit views for my videos (total views was 150,000). I got so addicted that music went from being a passion to chasing a material high, which turned my Love for music to greed. And due to the fact, I ended up right back on my ass.

Throughout my journey of creating and producing, I was mostly faced with gas talk and broken promises which made it hard for me to work with artists. Plus I had people in my ears saying I needed to not touch a button until money is involved, I had to go with the trend and current wave. Music was starting to feel like a escape plan that I was rushing to get to. I was tired of waking up 3:30 am to go work for a temp service who kept promising full time employment only to be a temp with no vacation, paid time off or solid benefits for over 2 years. Through desperation I begin to really chase the “Type Beat” movement because that’s how I was getting a lot of traffic plus I had BeatStars which was handling my transactions and clients. But 3 weeks later, my buzz died down and I was fielding for that high again.

To this day, I haven’t been able to have a week like that. Plus to this day, I haven’t heard any of the songs from the artists who bought my beats which hurt me more than not making money from music. In a way I wasted more beats trying to get sales and not trying to actually get placements on albums and etc. Eventually I was bitter and lost interest with music, whenever one of my friends wanted to work on some music I declined. My heart just wasn’t in it anymore, mad at the fact I couldn’t get that high again. I was impatient, friends were talking about let’s work on a album or let’s work on a EP and we can make something happen but (I apologize to my homies for this) I just took it as bullshit. Greed and trust issues, fogged my vision up so bad I wasn’t having fun with this anymore. I was so desperate I was on Twitter searching for these bs rappers asking to send beats but never responded. Spending countless days looking up search optimization, tags that could give my channel more traffic and creating beats that were hot at the moment.

This month marks 5 years since me and my brother Brandon Brains released a collab EP, Myth Mouth. I saw no profit from this project but I was able to travel the states for the first time and was introduced to the real indie scene. It didn’t bother me that he couldn’t pay for any of the beats that I created. I mean around this time, I was attending college about to graduate and it seemed like such a great opportunity, plus he was one of the dopest rappers I heard from Tennessee at the time. Plus I produced countless joints for Don S. with no interest in looking for payment from him. One of the most asshole moments I had was I had a homey name Dubble who was looking for some beats for his project he was working on at the time and I’ve known him since 2007 and always was a fan of him rapping but I was quick to tell him, “let’s talk money and then we can work”. After that, I never heard from him and I tried to reach out to him again but my interaction with him last time burnt a bridge between us and I was trying to get a verse from him for a shelved album I was working on and he was charging me $150 and said he tried to build with me but I was playing. Our friendship hasn’t really been that strong since then.

But the one thing greed held back is an artist that I’ve been working with since 2014 named Mikey Black. A very promising artist who has more than 20 songs ready in the vault produced by me but once again I was too focused on getting a major placement and selling beats on BeatStars. I’ve been trying to fly high before I even begin walking in this game. Seeing all these producers who were popping from YouTube like Taylor King, Yondo, P.Soul, BeatPlug and others. This has built the worst creative block I have ever faced in my 15 years of doing music. And with that, I decided to take a break from trying to create and fall in love with music again. First things first, finishing up my homey Mikey Black’s EP, “No Destination” plus working with an artist from Florida called Christian Jean on a possible album.

So if there’s anything I could teach these new producers, chase the dream and vision, don’t chase the check because if you do, you could trip and fall on your face. Everybody hates working a 9 to 5 but in the words of Phonte, “everybody gotta do a job that they fucking hate”. But at the same time, invest in your dream and work towards being the best producer you can be.

Song of the Day: Keyz - You and Me (Prod by Yondo)

New to most but old to some, I came across this gem while looking up some producers that I look up to on YouTube and saw this on top of the list. Became such a fan that I hit him up about sending him some beats. Keyz is a brother holding it down for the United Kingdom, Birmingham to be exact. "You and Me" gives you a real Roots, J Dilla type vibe with the upright bass groove and swinging drums. From the infectious hook to the pocket that kept help but get you bouncing along with every word Keyz is saying. If this is what this brother has to offer then Hip Hop is alive and well and we might be looking at a future king of this culture. This is the reason why I'm getting back to editorial and blogging so the world can pay attention now more than ever.

Verse of the Day (5/29)

First verse of the day has to go to a brother I came across on Instagram when I heard him rapping on one of my beats on my page and ever since I've followed his page and checked out all of his videos. Christian Jean coming straight from Florida, always dropping knowledge with his verses and this one here is no different. His pocket and flow is crazy plus the topic he speaks on is incredible. Check him out and follow him on Instagram: christ___jean

Artist Spotlight of the Week: Dubble

As I get back to being active in blogging especially for artist out here doing their thing without a major look and co-signs. In a way, I want to be the underground 2DopeBoyz, DJBooth, HotNewHipHop, etc for well deserving artist who deserves some shine especially doing music for years and years.

My first spotlight of the week goes to somebody that I have known for over a decade now since freestyling at Life Changers Church after teen bible study every Wednesday. This dude has always been a beast on the mic. And it goes to Dubble from Lansing, MI, 517 stand the fuck up. I remember when he dropped his first project on Datpiff called, "Superstar Status", which was released in July 31, 2010, under the name Jae Dub. In 2015-16, he reintroduced himself as Dubble. Ever since, he has released buzzin singles and even performed with his Ill Natured brothers at Michigan's festival, Common Ground.

Check out some of his latest work below:
